Amanda the Writer

Is writing a business?  Well I suppose it is no different from our other businesses.  I put time into it, create a product, market myself etc. I guess I will feel like it is more of a business once I have my first novel published.

I started my first novel in high school.  It was my dream to write novels and see them published. Now decades later I have more time on my hands again and I have taken up writing that novel again with a determination.  I decided to scrap the chapters I had already written and start over. I am almost a completely different person now than when I first wrote them and those chapters just didn’t make sense to me anymore.

It is a Fantasy novel of which I have completed 20,000 words to date.  I have also fleshed out the world and creatures which inhabit it a great deal. As I have gone along writing the novel and filling in the details of this world in a little encyclopedia of sorts, I have racked up 2 more novel ideas for the same world once this one is complete.  I have a rough working title of “A Power to Use: A Magick of Atlantea Tale” which has been about the same title since high school and seems a little clumsy.  Likely I will change it once I have the novel complete.  The working synopsis is:

“There is a sinister conspiracy in the city of Dia, where the orphaned princess Yarra has been suspiciously placed in the care of unlikely and cruel foster parents. Despite the fact that no magick has existed in Dia in living memory, the spark of Power is ignited in Yarra the day she meets Jaelithe—the awakening of that magick helps her break free of her foster parents but puts her life in dire peril. Events are set in motion and the girls find themselves on a journey together in which they discover a world of magick, mythical beings and a long lost family secret that links them together in a way they never imagined.  Yarra must accept the sins of her father, accept the responsibility of her birthright and discover her full potential so that she can to confront her oppressors, reunite with her family and save the city of Dia, if not the world!”

At the same time as working on the novel I am working on  the other necessities of being a writer.  I am creating a web presence with Twitter, Squidoo, Facebook etc.  I am brushing up on writing skills and following some of the steps and advice I have learned.  I even attended very first writers conference!   I spent the better part of my life being told and believing that it is not only impossible to get published but also the kind of thing you cannot make a living off of.  I am sick of listening to those naysayers!  Plenty of other people do it and I don’t see why I can’t too!

So here I go.  Almost 36 and ready to finally get going on my dream!
