Part 1 What, How, Why?
CHAPTER 3 To Tweet or not to Tweet…
So now you are a real live person on Twitter. Now you want to know what to Tweet. Likely you started off by Tweeting: “Hey I’m on Twitter” or something similar. The novelty wears off quick though and you are thinking now you want to start saying profound things. You want to start making yourself worthy of followers. The first question to ask though is not what should I Tweet, but should I Tweet or should I not Tweet–because its going to take a lot of time and effort to become worthy of followers and get that amazing Twitter account of your dreams.
Trying to figure out what kind of Tweets make them worthy of followers is what gets people into trouble and is a common place people make one of the Fatal Twitter Mistakes. Some people will start posting quotes by other people. Some people will start to post links to interesting articles. This becomes very unappealing en masse. First its very unoriginal because everyone is doing it—not to mention its not your own material. Second it really doesn’t tell people very much about you other than you that you like to fill up the Twitter feeds with spam and useless stuff.
The keys to your success on Twitter and to being worthy of followers will be in your authenticity, your value and your influence.
You want to be yourself—be authentic, be honest and original. The worst thing you can do is try to be somebody you are not. Emulating other successful Twitterers or pretending you are rich and successful are not the path to your Twitter success. People see through that kind of thing easily. Being yourself is the easiest way to be honest and original. Tell the world you are cooking potatoes for dinner. It’s a lot more original than some food related Confucius quote or pretending you are attending a fancy Hollywood gala for dinner! But you don’t always want to just be talking about what you are cooking for dinner either.
If you want people to value your Tweets, you have to provide valuable information without expecting anything in return. The problem here is your idea of valuable information may not be other people’s ideas of valuable information. For example, I think Twit-Quotes are useless. I don’t want to know phrases and sayings that famous people have said—even if they are wise. If I wanted to know that I could go out and look it up myself. Some people might love them though. The problem is nobody ever bothers to find out what others find valuable. They may even ignore the posts of others so that they never find out what people find valuable.
Providing value is going to take some work. Its going to cost 0$ but cost lots of time. You are going to need to investigate what other people find valuable. Are they asking for information on their Twitter feed? Do they say in their bio what they are interested in. When you find out what they find valuable then you have the secret password into their inner circle of valuable friends and acquaintances.
The final ingredient for a successful Twitter persona is to have influence. There are lots of things people think gains them influence on Twitter but in the big picture these things are fairly irrelevant. Influence is actually built on being a giving person and providing that value I mentioned above. You develop influence when you have provided value enough times that people begin to see you as a person who can be counted on to provide value. When you have a reputation for providing value and people start to either recommend you to be followed or re-Tweet your posts on a regular basis. When your Twitter followers know, like and trust you and they know your link off by heart so that they can recommend you to people at any time and any place—that is when you have influence, and that is when you are worthy of followers.
Your Twitter network isn’t about quantity, it’s about quality. If your network consists of thousands of people who don’t even know you, what good is it? The true network consists of those people who are walking, talking promoters of your success. Once you have that quality, the quantity will follow because everyone and their dog will want to follow you on Twitter.
So first be true to yourself. Second find out what people consider valuable. Third develop a reputation for being a provider of value—help people out, give tips, information, referrals to people and web sites that can help them, without ever expecting or getting anything in return—or at least without seeming to.
To do this you are going to need to spend a lot of time reading other people’s Tweets and using direct messages and @messages. You will need to talk directly back and forth with people and build a relationship with them. I did warn you that it was going to cost 0$ but lots of time! If you want to successful in Twitter and be worthy of followers, you really need to recognize and accept this!
Once you have done all this your Twitter success will skyrocket and you will have that amazing Twitter account that you always dreamed of—not to mention all the potential money to be made off such an influential Twitter persona. I am not here to teach you how to make money on your Twitter account but I can tell you that if you achieve success with your account there are limitless ways to monetize it.
And just to end this chapter on a grim note and try to warn you off reading any farther I will again reiterate how much time this is going to take for the rest of your Twi-xistence. As long as you want that account to stay successful, someone will always have to be manning the helm. Tweeple are fickle and have a short attention span. They will forget about you quickly if you step out of the limelight.
That was my Facebook update this morning. Normally I try not to be all preachy but sometimes I get inspired and I like to share my inspirations. This particular inspiration came from reading the Go-giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann concurrently with the book True Magick: A Beginner’s Guide by Amber K.
I suddenly had a thought while reading: Giving is our greatest power and giving makes you feel empowered and important. You can try to make a lot of things happen in your life and some of them might not happen for you. This can make you feel frustrated, disheartened or even depressed. There is one thing you can always count on be able to make happen and that is giving.
You can give your time, your respect, your courtesy, your appreciation etc. etc. etc. You can give money, you can give advice, you can give help, you can away your secrets to success. What is it that you have in your power to give? Nobody can stop you and in fact they will probably encourage your giving.
If your feeling a little powerless these days and you want some magic to happen in your life try your hand at giving. Decide right now that you are going to give something without expecting anything in return and go out and make it happen.
Outsourcing is great. There are a lot of places out there where you can outsource various things from programming to writing. If you work from home this is a big thing. You gotta get other people to do the post monkey crap or it will drive you insane.
So today I got almost nothing done because I was mostly waiting around for the plumber, not wanting to start anything major only to be interrupted, and then chatting with the plumber. Now this isn’t something I can just easily hire out on oDesk but it would have been a much more productive day if I had someone to do all that for me.
Outsourcing is a good way to avoid meaningless, time wasting tasks and I often find myself wondering, how many things can I outsource? We have a yard guy–that is technically outsourcing. We have a maid coming tomorrow and we are hoping she is going to do some laundry. Besides that all the monotonous tasks on the Internet in the name of Marketing we can outsource. We already have 3 people doing stuff for us online that we just don’t have the time or the patience for. Its really nice to know while I am wasting time with the plumber and getting absolutely nothing done there is a small handful of people getting stuff done for me.
The nice thing is the more the businesses grow the more we can hand off to other people to do. Outsourcing is an Internet Entrepreneurs best friend!
We did our very first webinar yesterday. We are calling it the DABA Cashflow Solutions Mastermind Series. We did the first in a planned series of 6 webinars on the Go-Giver. This is a book which introduces the revolutionary idea that giving is the key to stratospheric success. We will discuss how the principles in this book can be applied in ways that will help us, our team and our network to have successful online businesses.
In the webinar yesterday we introduced the book and discussed the first few chapters and outlined our expectations of participants. This series is meant to help people with their personal development and online marketing success now! We made it clear we expect a commitment to both read the book and apply each of the principles in the book between each weekly webinar.
Its a commitment but not a huge sacrifice. Participants have a whole week to go out and do what we ask. The whole book takes less than 5 hours to read and applying the principles could be as easy as bringing someone a cup of coffee. So you can see how its nothing huge. The benefits however to taking action now and learning these principles through action are huge though. In fact they are stratospheric!
So many people put off personal development entirely. Some people pick up a book and read it for personal development but decide they will “start” whatever they learn in the book once they are finished the book. Then once they are finished the book they forget or delay and they never end up getting anything out of it except some intellectual knowledge about how they could work on their personal development if they had the time.
We want you to read a book on personal development now and apply what you read now. So listen to the webinar and go out there and do something now!
PART 1 What, How, Why?
>CHAPTER 2 How to Become a Real Person on Twitter?
This chapter is about setting up your account. We will get to the meat of using Twitter in Part 2 but some of you maybe haven’t even made an account yet or started Tweeting at all. This book isn’t a “Using Twitter for Dummies Guide.” So I am not going to spend a lot of time on the basics of using Twitter. Setting up your account, however, is your foundation so I am going to go over it and give some tips for creating the best foundation to build your Tweets on.
First of all if you want to learn some basics I recommend you Google search “How do I use Twitter.” There are lots of good websites out there to help you. I found several links while doing my research for this book. I considered including them but these days you just don’t know which web pages you can count on to be there in the future and dead links are just plain frustrating. I figure, though, that Google will still be there for you when you read this!
When you create your account use your name. You are going to want to brand yourself. I chose AmandaHagarty. I have branded myself as AmandaHagarty or AmandaJuneHagarty in several different places. You want to make yourself distinct. You also want to emerge as a leader in your area and you want people to recognize you by name. Your human name is going to be a lot better for this than something like RoseThorn512 so I strongly urge you to use your real name. The days of being paranoid about giving people your real name on the Internet are behind us. Unless your twelve or in the witness protection or have a crazy stalker ex-boyfriend you really have nothing to fear from telling people your name. Now this is assuming everything you are going to post is respectable and stuff you wouldn’t mind your mother or your boss hearing.
Right about now maybe you are thinking: “hmmm let me check out her Twitter account and see what kind of Tweetstar she is.” Remember what I said in Chapter 1, though. I am not one of those people with thousands of followers or who says a lot of really profound stuff or whatever. I prefer to keep a low follow count and a low profile. At one time, I was well on my way to 1000 followers but I cut that short when I decided it wasn’t worth it. Anyone with a little intuitive intelligence can figure out the secret Twitter formula however and I got sick of seeing people charging a lot of money for the info. That is the only reason I am writing this book. If you know me or follow me you will know that I mostly treat Twitter with a tongue in cheek lack of respect. Frankly, my advice to you is not to get too sucked in or waste too much time on it. In fact, if you never read another word of my book and decided to not put so much stock in the “power” of Twitter I would applaud you. But if you still want to know more, let’s continue…
Next add an image and a bio. It is best to have a picture of yourself but really any image at all is going to be preferable to whatever that thing is that Twitter sticks you with when you first sign up. Your bio should give a little bit of info about what you are using Twitter for and your interests—it doesn’t have to be clever just something. Personally I never take people as seriously on Twitter if they don’t have an image and a bio. I will often go through my list of new followers, making arbitrary decisions on whether to follow back or not, and if they have really nothing much posted, no bio and no picture but they have already followed hundreds of people they don’t even know, this is a big strike against them. Once a person has decided not to follow you, chances are they will never see your info or Tweets ever again. Your first impression is everything in the Twitterverse so make it count!
Adding a URL is a critical step in the process if you are using Twitter for marketing. If you have more than one URL, you should get at least one central URL that has links to all your stuff—like a blog. For example, the URL I give on Twitter is Http://www.virtualbreadwinner.com/amanda. This is my main blog and in the sidebar I have all my links and programs. They are nice and visible and not too cluttered so a person can visit my blog and immediately see everything I want them to see. Your URL is where people will click to check you out if you manage to make them curious about you. This is your opportunity to show them more than the 140 words allows.
One thing that really annoys me is the number of people who spam their URLs in their Tweets. Maybe this gets them a few clicks, but from me it’s more likely to get them unfollowed. If your link is in your bio, you should not be Tweeting it! If you want to announce a new blog post then announce it without the link. If it catches someone’s interest, they will go to your link in your bio to see what it’s about. If they aren’t interested enough to do that then you don’t want them anyway. You want serious readers able to commit to more than just one click! Anyone who needs the link right there to be willing to click on it is going to have too short of an attention span and too little interest in your information to be of any use to you. The more time they invest in looking through your profile to find out who you are and where this blog is that you’re talking about, the more they will remember you. That is worth much more than the single click, skim and move on you get when you make it too easy for them.
You can add a location if you like. A lot of times people are curious about it, but it really isn’t that important. So now you have your account set up respectably. Your first few posts will probably be something silly and that’s ok. In fact most of my posts are silly. Just don’t make them too spammy. I just finished looking at a few of my new followers to see if any of them were worth following and one guy had posted: “1st post”, “2nd post”, “3”, “4”, “5”…and so on to 13 or something. It was ridiculous. A few I could have laughed about, but 13 just made me see visions of spam in my Twitter feed. Go ahead and post things like “Hey I am on Twitter” and “Having lunch now” and a few other normal things like that. It will tell people that you are a real person and you aren’t just some robot with an account for the express purpose of getting as many followers as possible and them spamming the daylights out of them.
You will notice the key to all my advice on setting up an account is to appear human. You are going to want to connect to people in a meaningful way on Twitter. The only way to do that is to let them know you are a real person just like them and that you can be trusted. This is how you will gain respect and emerge as a leader. Spammers are just lemmings. They are not leaders. Most of them don’t even know what the heck they are doing. You want to be more, you want to be better—or you would not be reading this book! So go out there and be you!
Hey everyone. I took a little time off recently to go visit my family in Canada. Family is important to me and I love the fact that making money online can be done anywhere from any country but I decided to treat it like a real vacation. I could have come on and blogged and done some marketing but I decided to leave the laptop in its bag. Even so the money kept rolling in while we were away and I love that part of making money online too.
This is definitely the way to live life. I mean truly live and not slave away helping someone else to get rich every day, having to beg or fight for the time off I wanted for vacation–if I even got a vacation at all. I can’t believe that I was ever like that. Now I realize how horrible it was working all day, or all night when I had crappy hours, and then coming home exhausted with just enough energy to make some food and collapse in front of the TV and get in an hour of entertainment before it was time for bed. I mean I knew I hated it but now that I have seen the other side I know just how hateful it was.
I am so grateful I have found this opportunity and am living my life the way I want to live it. It is a dream come true.
I am sick and tired of hearing about people selling the latest greatest guide to using Twitter. They sell for anything from $20 to $1000 and it just really isn’t right that people should charge for this information. First of all, its very simple. It’s not like there are some secret codes that only a few people have. If your sharp and you use Twitter and you poke your nose around a bit you could learn it without spending $1000. Second of all, you may think Twitter is the answer to all your Internet marketing dreams and many people say it is–but it isn’t. Everyone still thinks Twitter is the most important key to making money on the Internet and they need to learn for themselves that there is more to Internet marketing than Twitter. Unfortunately, this often means they waste good money on guides they could have done without. So I have decided to provide a free Twitter Guide here. It is geared to help people who would like to begin marketing with Twitter.
Don’t get me wrong. Twitter is very useful. It can and will add to your Internet marketing efforts if you use it right. Twitter still has a lot of flaws, however, and far too many misuse it or abuse it. This free Twitter Guide is meant to help you avoid common pitfalls and develop some useful techniques for your specific needs so that you can start marketing with Twitter properly!
The outline of my book is:
Part 1 What, How, Why?
Part 2 Following and being followed
Part 3 Tweeting
Part 4 Twitter Tools
Part 5 Reaching Beyond
I also have the Chapters outlined, but I think I will leave you with a little mystery. I will release each new chapter as I write it. So here for your reading pleasure is:
PART 1 What, How, Why?
>CHAPTER 1 What is this Twitter Thingie Anyway?
If you are reading this chances are you know basically what Twitter is and you just want to know how to use it better. For the sake of completeness I am going to explain what Twitter is in this chapter. You could skip it if you think you know it all, or you could read on to see what my perspective is on Twitter—maybe it isn’t what you think.
If you want the Wikipedia definition of Twitter you can find it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twitter. I am not writing this book to regurgitate definitions to you, however. My answer to the question “What is Twitter?” is really just my opinion, my observations and my attitude. When it comes to Twitter I do have a bit of an attitude and so should you. Without an attitude towards Twitter, it will quickly crush your spirit.
Twitter is both a giant waste of time and a very useful tool at the same time. It’s a waste of time for some who get sucked in or addicted to it and it’s also a waste of time for those who don’t really know how to use it. When people use Twitter without knowing how to use it, they also smear their waste of time all over the Twitterverse. Followers who read waste-of-time-Tweets by accident, Followers who think, “What the—why am I following this person?” and go through the steps of un-following, Followers who mistake waste-of-time-Tweets for something of quality—the time-wasting repercussions are infinite and terrible!
Fortunately for the Twitterverse you have decided to educate yourself. I won’t make any grand claims to being a huge Twitter Champion or make any promises of what you can become on Twitter by reading this book. Personally, I don’t even like Twitter. But it’s here and it huge. It’s use it or lose it time, and by lose it I mean lose the opportunity Twitter provides.
The useful side of Twitter, the opportunity, is very powerful. I don’t think Twitter has fully evolved out of its primordial ooze yet, which is why the power can get scattered or cluttered, but evolution will keep pushing it forward. Right now if you know a little bit about how to use Twitter, you can maximize the power and minimize the clutter. Later once it fully matures those who dared to learn to use it in its early stages will have a huge head start.
So my message to you is: don’t be late for the party, but don’t be a wall flower, or that girl who dances like a freak (I mean freak in the old-fashioned, bad sense of the word), or that guy who shakes everyone’s hand and immediately asks them if have the latest widget because he sells it if they want it.
Unfortunately, educated Twitter users are few and far between. Most Tweeple are like children playing with a loaded gun and you are just going to have to learn how to play in the same sandbox as them without getting a foot blown off or worse. So part of your education will be about how to use Twitter and part of it will be about how to survive Twitter.
As I said, I am no Twitter Champion. I don’t have tens of thousands of followers, though I could if I really wanted too—its not that hard and you don’t have to be a Twitter genius to do it. Some people will flaunt their large follower base as some kind of proof that they know what they are talking about, but the size of your Twitter following does not mean you know how to use it. People who are trying to get you to believe that they know everything about Twitter based on their number of followers are taking advantage of your Twignorance.
Getting a lot of followers is one of the easiest things to do on Twitter. So, whatever you do don’t spend some crazy amount of money on someone’s Twitter education course, based on the fact that they have a lot of Twitter followers. It doesn’t mean what they want you to think it means!
What I have is a little experience using and experimenting with Twitter, a perceptive eye and a sharp mind. I have made observations about how Twitter works and I have learned how to turn those observations into methods of using Twitter. I also have a degree in Psychology and always had a knack for things like behaviorism and experimental methods. I think these are very relevant to my current understanding of Twitter.
The Twitterverse isn’t an inanimate thing. It is an entity— a living being, and each individual Twitterer is like a cell in its body. Think of it like a giant Dog (I am a Psych Major so obviously I am thinking of Pavlov and his dogs!). When the cells in the Dog’s nose pick up the scent of food, they tell the cells of the mouth to cause salivation, and then the cells in the stomach to cause gurgling, and then the cells in the eyes to look for the food, and then the cells in the muscles to cause movement so that the Dog eats the food. If you can figure out what scent triggers this chain reaction you can figure out how to get the Dog to swallow what you are offering. Imagine what you could accomplish if you figured out how to train the Dog?
In this book I will share everything I know about the Twitterverse Entity with you—not because I know how to train the Dog or even how to get it to eat—but because I have noticed a few things about what makes the Dog tick. Even if a scientist doesn’t know the answer to Life the Universe and Everything she can still publish her findings or we wouldn’t have scientific advancements at all. What I am saying is look on this book as a small piece of the puzzle to help further your understanding of Twitter and I don’t make any claims that it is anything else.
Each person’s use for Twitter will need to be tailored just for them. If you learn to use Twitter as best you can through education like this book and from your general experience you will have a precise and powerful tool custom made just for you.
My husband James is a big fan of the book called the Go-Giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann. He really firmly believes that to more you give to others the more you will get out of life.
We are enjoying a JOB free lifestyle right now. He fired his boss about 2 years ago and I fired my boss over a year ago. We make all our money from online enterprises. We are both pretty passionate about telling people that they can do the same thing, but now James has decided to go one step further. He has committed to helping 10 people fire their bosses in the next 12 months.
He is having trouble however finding anybody willing to commit to him even as far as filling out a questionnaire within 48 hours. A lot of people have said they want to fire their boss, but when they were called to action they put it off. I am not even talking about them being asked to “put your money where your mouth is.” Of course at some point it will require an investment of some kind, because he will be showing you how to start your own business and that requires an investment (no he isn’t charging for his mentoring…I am talking about investing in *your* business).
The surprising thing is that even before he said anything about investing money, he merely asked for a few minutes of time to fill out his questionnaire, and every single person who put up their hand and jumped up and down and said “me me me–I wanna fire my boss” has failed to send back the questionnaire.
Now it’s not like he said anything really horrible or asked anything too weird in the survey–it’s just basic -what’s your name, what experience do you have, how much time can you commit- kind of questions. I know what is going on with these people, though. They think, “Oh I want to make sure I do a really full and complete job of this.” As if this questionnaire is the most important and critical thing they will do on their road to financial freedom–gimme a break! They put it in their to-do-for-later list and never get to it because they are too busy going back and forth to work every day and just surviving.
The reality is that having this questionnaire perfect is not very important. In fact, the questions in it don’t mean as much as the ability of the person to follow through with what was asked of them. If any of these people had even sent a half complete questionnaire, filled out to the best of their ability, or even an e-mail asking questions about how they should fill it out–they would have passed the test easily.
So James is still without people for this special team. I think it’s going to be hard to find 10 people for this, but I know the people are out there. So if you think you want to be on James’ special team, e-mail: (james at buyinfiniteincome dot com) and ask for the questionnaire.
Before you e-mail him however think about it very carefully. It’s easy to say you want to fire your boss–to actually do it is hard work. It requires commitment, and willingness to go beyond your comfort zone. If you are comfortable in your current job and not willing to experience a little discomfort to get something better, then you have no business e-mailing James at all.
So if you are not ready then please do not waste your and James’ time. If you are ready please send your e-mail to: (james at buyinfiniteincome dot com)–my husband needs you so he can fulfill his presonall goal!
Three things you really need to have when you are self employed but which are so often overlooked are organization, goal setting and accountability. There are so many things you need when you are self employed that are often overlooked, but these three things lay a good foundation and structure. If you have these then you can keep a forward momentum that will bring you much success.
Organization does not have to be complex. I have already blogged about how much I hate a rigid and full schedule. After all what fun is it being self-employed if you can’t do what you want when you want? Good organization is not necessarily about having a schedule, it is really just structure and is closely entwined with goal setting and accountability. Staying organized is all about setting yourself some goals and making sure you get them done. The key to making sure you accomplish your goals is having a sense of accountability. If you don’t feel accountable to meet your expectations then your motivation will falter. Without motivation why would you get anything done at all?
If you like schedules then by all means make one. Be reasonable with your time though. Remember Rome wasn’t built in a day. You may need a few weeks to sort out what you can get done in the time you have so don’t beat yourself up too much if you don’t accomplish everything you set out to in the beginning. Take a good look at what you did get accomplish and then modify your schedule as you see fit for the next week. The key is to focus on the wins not the losses. If you don’t like schedules then feel free to stay loosey goosey, but make sure to do something on a regular basis to check on yourself and see where you are at. A weekly meeting is a good way to keep organized.
James and I normally have a meeting every Monday. We are all sappy too. Every meeting starts and ends with a hug. Our meetings serve to review previous goals and accomplishments and set new goals. We make sure to celebrate our wins. If we accomplished our goals, if we fell short of our goals but got lots accomplished or even if we accomplished goals we had not planned–we do a little fist pump like Tiger Woods and say “Yes!” to celebrate the win. It may sound silly but it really helps us feel good about what we are doing and keeps us energized for what we need to do next.
Last week we did not have a meeting because of the holiday. The result was a fairly unproductive and disorganized week. We looked back on the week and realized where we went wrong. First without a meeting we did not set any goals or recognize our accomplishments and second we did not tell our new goals to each other to create a sense of accountability. I kind of scribbled a few non committal things down to do for the week and then, of course, I totally did not commit to them. In our meeting this morning we had to admit that having this weekly meeting was important. It helps us stay focused and keeps our momentum going.
We acknowledged that all the schedules in the world won’t help if you loose momentum and your commitment lacks a foundation. We still had wins to celebrate though. We looked at the month over all because this is the beginning of a new month and this is our month end review–another part of our routine. Both of us got a lot done in the month, despite last week. We had many a fist pump and pat on the back.
After discussing what we accomplished and celebrating our wins we set new goals and discussed which of us would work on those goals and how. We focused on some stuff we felt was lacking recently and decided what we would do to improve it. Each of us talked about personal projects and goals as well. This public acknowledgment is so important. If you don’t tell anyone but yourself what your goals are there isn’t enough accountability to push you on and motivate you to reach for those goals. James and I have each other but even if you are in this on your own you can publicly acknowledge your goals. You could try blogging once a week about what goals you accomplished and what new goals you are setting. Announce them on Facebook or Twitter. There are a lot of things you can do to create that sense of accountability you need to keep you motivated.
How ever you run your business, remember these key things: keep organized with structure, set goals and recognize your achievments, and find ways to keep a sense of accountability to reach your goals. Remember that it’s the whole process that is important, not one piece or part of it. It’s more important to keep moving forward every week than to get hung up on exactly what you will be doing wednesday at 1pm or to get stuck on the fact that you did not accomplish goal #7 last week.
